How to Surpass the iPad Camera Connection Kit’s Power Limitations (even on iOS 5)

I’ve already covered this on YouTube, but I thought I should throw up a post for anyone else who isn’t aware…

Using the iPad Camera Connection Kit and a powered USB hub to record two Shure SM-58‘s in MultiTrack DAW for iPad.

You’re probably reading this because you plugged something into your iPad and got the following message: “Accessory Unavailable: The attached accessory requires too much power.” Well if you’re on iOS 4.3.1 or above, you’re in luck. All you need is a powered USB hub, and you’ll be able to connect just about anything…

Multi Track Song Recorder for iPhone is Still FREE!

This is a GREAT app for just getting your ideas down. You can import, loop, and record up to four tracks of infinite length. It’s also got a tap metronome with 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures. It’s been free for a while now but according the the iTunes description, it’s a “premier free” app. I’m not sure if the developer’s still active or not, but you can follow his Blogger development blog to be informed of any future updates.

What is the State of the iPad Camera Connection Kit on iOS 5 in terms of Power?

Update: the CCK does work with the iPad on 5.0 and 5.0.1

Got a question submitted to the help, topic suggestion, or news submission forum and I though it was another darn good one…

“It’s black friday and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to get a Camera Connection Kit for my iPad 2. I wanna connect an audio interface for using my electric guitar, and also send the audio out (not necessarily both of those at the same time, but that would be awesome…) instead of using the lower quality headphone jack. I was looking around on Google and didn’t find anything that confirmed if the whole power issue is resolved in iOS 5/5.0.1… I’m willing to buy a powered USB hub if it’s necessary…”


I don’t have a CCK (but I just might get one if this is possible) so I’m of no use here, has anybody tried this at home? Comment below….
