The question that I get asked the most would probably be “is it possible to connect my iPad to my Desktop DAW?” iConnectivity seems to have addressed this issue with their iConnectMIDI2+ ($89.99 – not bad at all!) and 4+ ($199.99) audio MIDI interfaces…
iConnectMIDI2+ is not only a 2 in 2 out MIDI interface for PC, MAC, and iOS. It also introduces two exciting new features to enable musicians to professionally integrate more than one computer or an iOS device into their music making environment.
The first of these technologies allows for more than one computing device to access the same MIDI resources. This is useful in many ways such as, sending MIDI from a controller or synth to a DAW and an iOS device simultaneously, setting up redundancy in a live MIDI environment, sending MIDI from multiple computing devices to one another, and more.
iConnectMIDI2+ also features Audio Pass-through. This patent pending technology is integral to using iOS, and multiple computing devices (Mac, PC, and iOS) in a professional environment by enabling the devices to pass not only MIDI data but also audio data from device to device. There are many practical applications for this technology, for example now musicians can use a DAW on their MAC or PC to control a virtual instrument or other music making program on their iOS or other computing device (PC, MAC, iOS) and send the MIDI data as well as audio data back to the DAW without extra cables, or signal degradation or additional analog to digital conversion.
iConnectMIDI2+ Features:
- 2 In & 2 Out Sets of MIDI DIN Connectivity
- MultiHost Capability – Connect 2 Computing Devices Simultaneously
- Supports MAC, PC, and iOS Computing Devices
- Audio Pass-Through From One Computing Device To Another
- Integrated MIDI Manager With Snapshot Preset Storage – For MIDI Thru, MIDI Merge, Filtering, and Advanced Routing Control
- USB MIDI Class Compliant
- USB Bus Powered
- Supports 10 Ports of 16 Channels of MIDI I/O Per Port
- Plug and Play – No Drivers Needed
- Charge iOS Devices via Optional Adapter
Finally, a high quality way to connect your iDevice to your Mac / PC DAW!

I’m getting the 4+ as it supports MIDI over Ethernet. This will be arguably the most important iPad accessory for music.

I agree about its importance: this will fill a niche that desperately needs to be filled. I wish I could get by with the 2+ unit but I know myself too well, the 4+ will allow a little room to “grow” my rig.

As an owner of the original iConnectMIDI, I can say it is one the best purchase decisions I have made. Tried to get things connected for months, trying to configure my USB/MIDI device, trying to use a DAW on my laptop as a passthrough to the iPad and nothing seemed to be working. Plus, I was trying to LIGHTEN my load at the time. I was actually wanting to remove my laptop from my live setup, but needed it to get my Oxygen 49 (USB) to control my Yamaha Rack XS (MIDI). Suddenly the price of the iConnectMIDI no longer mattered as much as the capabilities it offered. Once I set it up and installed the most recent firmware…everything just worked. With ease. The Port Manager iPad app is really well done as well and lets you control routing and a ton of other data, and even lets you save these settings for recall later.
It is built tough and solid and with its mini size, fits easily in small gig bags or a backpack.
I trust these new versions are just as solid and well done as the original. Let us know what you think Empolo.

I the video he states that the prices are $69 for the iConnectMIDI2+ and $199 for the iConnectMIDI4+ but elsewhere I read that they are 89 and 249. What’s the real scoop?

that’s the MSRP, meaning it won’t be higher than that (manufacturer’s suggested retail price)

Does any one know: could this serve as a powered USB hub that actually charges the iPad (and routes digital audio). I use the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 >> USB hub >> CCK >> iPad2. Could the iconnect2+ take the place of the usb hub in my scenario? My current setup does not keep my iPad charged so I may be interested once I inevitably kill my poor iPad battery.

In one of the video (not this one, one in german/english) the guy say you can plug the iconnect X+ to your plug and play for hours !

The 4+ will charge the iPad and also the USB host will handle class compliant audio devices (according to a NAMM video). Which makes it a complete solution for everything I need to do. Can’t wait.

So the 2+ will not provide power to the iPad? That would make it fairly useless to me, and I don’t need a 4+. Very disappointing if that’s the case. =(

Sounds like it just needs an (optional?) AC adapter in order to charge. Will this be a purchaseable option or will it use a standard adapter we can get anywhere (or may already have laying about)?

i had the iConnectMIDI1, and it came with an adapter, so my guess is they will sell an adapter if you need it for their newer gear.
The iConnectMIDI1 sent my musicmaking into the stratosphere. Only problem was it didn’t charge my iPad and iPhone. Can’t wait till the new boxes come out.
Built like a tank except an incorrectly soldered usb input failed on mine and a bunch of others. Bet they’ll be paying very close attention to manufacturing this time, because I bet they got burned having to deal with returns. Can’t wait!

Does it come with a 19″ rack mountable kit or is there a 19″ rack version?

Whats up with the usb B connection for ios devices? So we need to either get an adaptor or buy the iconnect special cable? Maybe its a surface space issue. Other than that, I’m looking forward to grabbing this and completing the setup.
