Bluetooth MIDI on iOS: the first steps!

I’ve been thinking about Bluetooth MIDI on iOS for a while now, and it’s finally happening! I shot the developer an email yesterday asking if he had plans to add Virtual MIDI to his upcoming ROTOSynth app. This would allow any app that supports Virtual MIDI, to also support Bluetooth MIDI simply by using ROTOSynth as a ‘bridge.’ Also, we wouldn’t have to wait for every developer to add Bluetooth support. He replied with

That’s a fantastic idea that I hadn’t really thought of. In fact, maybe it’d be best to just have a really basic app that just implements my Bluetooth stuff and sends/receives MIDI messages to other apps with Virtual MIDI. ROTOSynth still has dev to be done on the synth engine, so this way, I could get the BT stuff out without having to finish ROTOSynth first. I’m thinking about taking the project to Kickstarter, I’m just a really busy grad student and I almost need a little startup company to get this going.

…I’m TOTALLY going to back that Kickstarter.

Jay put a page up on his site that details the hardware, software, and some latency stats that YOU HAVE TO SEE. He’s looking for some positive feedback before getting started so if this is something you’d like to see LEAVE HIM A COMMENT HERE!

What’s coming next from Notion Music…

I shot the developers of the super fantastic Notion notation app for iPad an email regarding Core MIDI support in Notion, and plans for an iPhone version. Here’s what they had to say:

We just got finished with our desktop version of Notion 4 and plan on releasing it October 31st of this year. After that we are going to move our attention to the iPad app and hope to be adding core MIDI support as well as dozens of new features over the next couple of months. After that, we are talking about doing an app/s for the iPhone. We are very excited about things to come in Notion.

It may be downloaded already created templates by us or you can create your own controls with different layouts.

[Video] Magnetometer Virtual MIDI Controller App

Uploaded by SampleLabApp on April 21, 2012:

“This is a magnetometer enabled virtual MIDI controller app made by Aaron Pride for the RVA Hackathon 2012 (RVAHackathon.com) The other apps featured are Sunrizer and NLog Synth.

Using core MIDI, audio backgrounding, along with the Z axis readings off the magnetometer… negative pole vs. positive pole of the magnets will trigger pitch up or down. Sends pitchwheel, modwheel, and random note commands w/ poly-aftertouch.

BE CAREFUL PLAYING WITH STRONG MAGNETS!”

… cool!
