Do we really need iPad specific hardware at this point?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while now, and if you follow me on Twitter you may have heard me rant about it a while back. Right now, with an iPad Camera Connection Kit ($30, even less if you get only the USB connector on ebay – just make sure it’s official) and a powered USB hub (give or take $25 new) you can connect just about any of the gear that you already have to your iPad. Some of which you can even connect without a hub. I just feel like a lot of the major ‘iPad compatible’ gear is drastically lacking at least one important feature. The Akai SynthStation 49 drastically lacks knobs and sliders, the iO Dock doesn’t work with USB MIDI controllers unless you’ve got a computer in between it and the controller, or unless you want to do all of this, ect… What do you guys think? Is there any iPad specific gear that you’re considering? or using? Or is it all just marketing hype? Leave a comment below!

Override iPad Camera Connection Kit’s power limitation with generic iPad combo card reader USB hub

Apparently you can override the iPad’s power limitation with a card reader combo USB hub - I’ve never bought one of these off ebay, so I don’t know if that link is trustworthy or not. Also, I’m pretty sure that you don’t need to be jailbroken to use it. Can anyone confirm that (and maybe provide a better ebay link?) in the comments? I’ll try to order one soon.

This was already mentioned on the latest episode of Sonic Touch, but it deserves re-posting.

iConnectionKit iPad Camera Connection Kit Cydia jailbreak tweak iPod Touch issue

Update: Cydia tweak, CameraConnector has been released under the BigBoss repo!

I’m sure that by now, many of you know of the (hopefully) upcoming iConnectionKit Cydia tweak that will allow the iPhone / iPod Touch iPad Camera Connection Kit support. I’ve been meaning to post about this for a while, but only recently remembered this issue after connecting a MIDI keyboard to a 4th generation iPod Touch with the beta version (which was sent to me back in April – I’m really late here). For some reason, Apple put the headphone port on the iPod Touch at the bottom of the device, next to the dock connector. So depending on the size of the headphone jack you want to use with the Camera Connection Kit, they may not both fit. The CCK is about 1.15 inches wide, so there are some headphones that will work, but my headphone’s jack, which seems pretty normal sized (~0.375 inches), doesn’t fit.

This will not effect iPhone users, the headphone port on the iPhone is located at the top of the device.

Assuming your headphone’s jack is too wide, you could still use the iPad Camera Connection Kit for other purposes, like an accelerometer MIDI controller, or just for a convenient way to back up / make space on a USB thumb drive or SD card…

[Video] My Jazzy Child plays Rockmate – Now $0.99 from $2.99

To introduce the new version 1.1 of Rockmate, we have invited My Jazzy Child (Clapping Music) to play with Rockmate.

This video have been fully recorded and produced with the new iPad using Rockmate (v1.1).

No editing and no mastering have been added to the final result. The .wav used on the video come from Rockmate app.

My jazzy child used some of the new kits included in Rockmate (v1.1):

The Brush kit for drums, the Cello and the Wurlitzer for keyboard’s kits.
A USB microphone was connected through the camera connection kit to the iPad and a headphone was used.
