iRig MIDI Review

If you’re deciding between the Line 6 MIDI Mobilizer II, the Yamaha i-MX1, and the iRig MIDI, you should probably go with the iRig. All of these interfaces support Core MIDI, cost $69.99, and have MIDI DIN in and outs, but only the iRig has MIDI THRU and a USB (Micro-B) charging port. If you’re looking to connect multiple controllers to your iDevice, or only have controllers with solely USB ports, iConnectMIDI is the interface for you… So, that said, lets get into this review!

Latency:
I didn’t experience any latency issues with my controller. It seems perfectly fine. If you did, let me know by commenting below. I’d be surprised if there are any major issues after all the YouTube demo videos IKM made

Setbacks:
The biggest setback was that the USB Micro-B cable it comes with is literally a foot long. This is pretty darn inconvenient, but you can purchase longer cables on the internet for very little money… Lastly, the unit itself feels pretty ‘plasticy,’ and easy to break. You probably can’t sit or step on this thing and expect it to still work. But at the same time, we are talking about something that’s just going to be sitting in your iPhone’s dock, so a super solid unit isn’t extremely necessary… But at the end of the day, it really comes down to how durable you prefer your interfaces to be.

Conclusion:
iOS Musician Rating: 3.5/5 Stars

If you want a more durable interface, and don’t really need USB charging and MIDI THRU, check out the Line 6 MMII and i-MX1. I’ll throw up a review as soon as I get my hands on them. But if you’re more of a careful user and really need USB charging, go with the iRig…

Other Notes:

  • What’s in the Box:
  • I tested the iRig with my iPod Touch 4G and iPad 2. Both of them can lay on a flat surface with the iRig plugged in.
  • IK Multimedia also released an iPhone app along with the iRig MIDI: SampleTank. Priced at $9.99, and with in-app purchases of $4.99 a sound pack, it’s a fairly expensive buy. But well worth it, there’re some great sounds…
  • I’m not sure if there are plans to add iPad support for the app, or a native iPad version, but you can run it on the iPad…

The sounds are derived from the award–winning desktop version of SampleTank, which has been used on countless records and productions by world-class artists and producers. Furthermore, new premium instruments have been recorded especially for the new iOS app.
